Chamonix vs Courmayeur: Which Side of Mont Blanc?

A France-versus-Italy comparison of Chamonix and Courmayeur for UK chalet guests who want Mont Blanc and need to choose a side.

Steep snow-covered peaks representing a Mont Blanc chalet holiday

Chamonix and Courmayeur face each other across Mont Blanc and run different holidays. One is a French valley of separate ski areas and a busy mountain town. The other is an Italian town with a more contained ski area and a different kitchen. This page is that choice. Where to sleep inside the Chamonix valley is already answered in the Chamonix chalet holiday guide.

The mountain and the map

Chamonix is not one ski area. Le Brévent, La Flégère, Les Houches, Argentière and Le Tour are different mornings, often with a bus between them. That variety is why confident skiers and mixed groups like the valley. It is also why a “Chamonix chalet” can still be the wrong side of town for the lift you meant.

Courmayeur puts most of its piste skiing on the Checrouit side above the town. You are not organising a valley bus to reach a second resort before coffee. The area is smaller than Chamonix’s combined mountains. For many weeks, smaller is the feature.

High routes that cross the massif are a guided day, not a reason to treat the towns as interchangeable. If off-piste is the point of the trip, start from the off-piste chalets search and hire a guide for the conditions that week. This article does not describe those routes.

Beginners and families

Courmayeur is the cleaner first choice of the two. One area, a town you can walk, and an Italian ski-school day that does not start with a timetable of cable cars. It is still a mountain resort. Check the meeting point against the chalet.

Chamonix can be a good lesson week in the right area, and a muddle if you picked the town first and the nursery slope second. The hamlets are explained in the Chamonix guide. If the group has never skied, also read first ski holiday in France before Chamonix becomes the default.

Families who need a lot of easy mileage may find either town short of the endless blue runs a big French resort advertises. Families who need a day off the snow will be glad they chose a town at all.

Non-skiers and evenings

Both towns look after a non-skier better than a purpose-built ski station. Chamonix is larger, louder and easier to fill with a museum, a walk or a long lunch. Courmayeur is the prettier short walk and the more Italian evening: a smaller centre, and dinner as part of the holiday rather than an extra.

A group that wants Verbier’s chalet scene or Zermatt’s car-free Swiss centre is in the wrong comparison. That one is Verbier vs Zermatt.

Airports and the tunnel

Geneva is the usual Chamonix arrival, and the weekend transfer context is in ski resorts near Geneva Airport. Courmayeur’s natural Italian airport is Turin. Geneva can still be the right landing if the Mont Blanc tunnel is open and the Sunday queue is one you have allowed for.

The tunnel is a practical link between the towns. It does not make them one resort, and it is a poor plan for nipping back to a forgotten pair of boots. Pick a side for the week.

Where the chalet should sit

In Courmayeur, the town centre suits non-skiers and dinners. A chalet on the road towards the lifts can suit a ski-every-day group and annoy everyone else. Ask which bus or walk connects the two.

In Chamonix, do not repeat the valley tour here. Use the Chamonix guide to choose the town, Les Houches, Argentière or Le Tour, then come back to this page only if Courmayeur is still the alternative.

Which side to book

Choose Chamonix for the big French valley, the choice of ski areas and a busier town. Choose Courmayeur for a smaller Italian base under the same mountain. Search Chamonix chalets and Courmayeur chalets on the same dates before you decide the view is the same from both pillows.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chamonix or Courmayeur better?

Chamonix is the better base when you want a big French mountain town and several ski areas. Courmayeur is the better base when you want a smaller Italian town and one main ski area under Mont Blanc. The mountain is shared. The holiday is not.

Which is better for beginners?

Courmayeur is usually the simpler learning base because the skiing is more contained. Chamonix can teach beginners and still asks them to pick a ski area and often a bus. A first week may be calmer in a resort chosen specifically for lessons.

Which airport should you use?

Geneva is the usual airport for Chamonix. Courmayeur is often approached from Turin, or from Geneva through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Compare the full journey for your week, including Sunday traffic in the tunnel.

Can non-skiers enjoy either resort?

Yes. Chamonix is the larger town, with more going on and more buses. Courmayeur is smaller and easier to walk, with an Italian evening. Both beat a purpose-built station for a rest day.

Do they share the same slopes?

They are on opposite sides of Mont Blanc. Some high itineraries link the valleys with a guide. A normal piste day in one resort is not a piste day in the other. Choose the town you are sleeping in.
