Méribel vs Courchevel: Where to Stay in the Trois Vallées

A village-level Méribel and Courchevel comparison for UK travellers booking a chalet in the Trois Vallées, not a ranking of the whole ski area.

Skier on a wide Alpine piste, suggesting a Trois Vallées chalet week

Méribel and Courchevel share the Trois Vallées. That fact causes more booking mistakes than it prevents. You can ski from one to the other. You still sleep in one village, meet a ski school in one place, and eat in the streets outside your door. This guide chooses between those two bases. It is not a ranking of every village in the valley.

Val Thorens, Les Menuires and La Tania are part of the mountain. They do not have ChaletAway resort pages, so they are context here, not places this article sends you to book.

One ski area, several holidays

The Trois Vallées is large enough that a confident intermediate can ski a different valley on different days. That is the reason to book either resort. It is also the reason a “ski-in ski-out Trois Vallées” badge is almost meaningless. Ski-out to which lift, and home from which valley at 4pm?

Méribel sits in the middle of the system, which is why so many chalet weeks use it as the base. Courchevel sits on the eastern side, with more than one centre. Treat a trail map as a map of the skiing. Treat the booking as a choice of bed.

For a short break, the Geneva transfer ranking lives in ski resorts near Geneva Airport. This page assumes a week.

Méribel

Méribel’s building rules kept a chalet look that many UK guests specifically want. The centre is the social base: shops, a ski school, and the evening most chalet groups are picturing.

Méribel Village sits slightly above that centre. It is quieter, and it only works if the path to the lifts and the school is realistic in ski boots. Méribel Mottaret is higher up the valley, more functional, and often the easier ski-in address. It is a weaker choice if the holiday depends on Méribel’s evening.

A group that wants one attractive centre, and is happy to ski out to Courchevel or the other valleys for the day, should start with Méribel Centre.

Courchevel

Courchevel is a set of villages, not a single high street.

The highest centre, still widely called Courchevel 1850, is the famous one: polished, expensive in reputation, and busy in school holidays. Courchevel Moriond, also known as 1650, is a more modest ski base on the same mountain. Courchevel Village, or 1550, and Le Praz sit lower, with a different pace and a different walk to the snow.

Any of them can be the right chalet week. None of them should be booked because the listing said “Courchevel” and the photographs looked smart. Ask which village, which lift, and how you get home when the afternoon bus is the alternative to skiing back.

Le Praz suits groups who want a prettier, quieter base and will use the lift. The high centre suits groups who want to be in the middle of that particular scene and have checked that the chalet is genuinely there.

Beginners and families

Both resorts teach beginners. The mistake is putting a first-week family in the most famous street because the ski area is famous.

Méribel Centre is a fair family shortlist when the school meets nearby and the chalet is not up a steep unploughed lane. Mottaret can be practical for skiing and dull for a parent who does not ski. In Courchevel, look at the lower and mid-level villages before you assume the high centre is the family product.

Evenings, groups and price level

Méribel’s evening is the classic chalet-holiday evening: one centre, a short walk, a group that can stay together. Courchevel’s evening is whatever village you chose. The high centre is dressed for a different budget and a different crowd. Le Praz is calmer.

This guide does not quote prices. Compare the same week, the same number of proper bedrooms, and what catering is included. A lower headline rate in the wrong village is an expensive week of taxis.

Méribel or Courchevel

Choose Méribel when you want one chalet-style centre in the middle of the Trois Vallées. Choose Courchevel when a specific village, higher or lower, matches how the group spends the late afternoon. Then search Méribel and Courchevel for those dates.

If the argument is really Val d’Isère or Tignes, that is a different ski area: Val d’Isère vs Tignes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Méribel or Courchevel better?

Méribel is the usual choice for a British-style chalet week in an attractive centre. Courchevel is the better choice when you want a particular village level, from Le Praz up to the famous high centre. The ski area is shared. The week is not.

Are Méribel and Courchevel in the same ski area?

Yes. Both sit in the Trois Vallées. You can ski between them. Sleeping in one village does not put the other village’s shops, ski school or evening outside your door.

Which is better for beginners?

Both have beginner areas. Courchevel’s lower villages and Méribel Centre can each work if the ski-school meeting point is close. A high, steep setting is the wrong default for a first week. Read the France first-timer guide if nobody in the group has skied before.

Which is better for families?

Méribel Centre and Méribel Village suit many families who want a chalet and a walkable base. Courchevel Le Praz and the mid-level villages can suit families who want a quieter evening. Check the route to lessons before you choose the smartest address.

Can I stay in Val Thorens or La Tania instead?

They are part of the ski area. ChaletAway does not publish resort pages for them, so this guide does not recommend them as booking bases. Compare Méribel and Courchevel, which you can search.
